ETI currently offers two LCD-based eBook models, the ETI-1 and the ETI-2, to effectively address both consumer and enterprise needs. At the IDPF Digital Book 2007 event, ETI demonstrated a prototype eBook device with a 6” E-Ink display running the first device-based implementation of the new IDPF content standards.

ETI-1

The ETI-1 is roughly the size of a hardcover book and offers a large, full-color, backlit screen. Popular in enterprise deployments the ETI-1 is especially good for reading books, magazines, periodicals and training materials replete with photos and graphic images. This eBook device also offers powerful features that enhance the user's reading experience beyond that of a traditional book. By simply touching the screen, you can enlarge the text size, bookmark pages, highlight passages, make notes, search for key words, look up definitions from preloaded dictionaries and hyperlink to other parts of the book.

ETI-2

The ETI-2 is approximately the size of a paperback book, weighing almost a pound, and with its backlit monochrome screen, the ETI-2 gives new meaning to the term "light reading." Often used for consumer reading applications it also includes powerful built-in features that extend the reading experience beyond that of a traditional book. User's can turn pages and change the text orientation just by pushing a button. By simply touching the screen, you can enlarge the text size, bookmark pages, highlight passages, make notes, search for key words, and look up definitions from preloaded dictionaries and hyperlink to other parts of the book.

Device Software
  • The operating system is Nucleus from Mentor Graphics.
  • A DOS-compatible file system manages the internal Flash as well as SmartMedia and Compact Flash-based extensions.
  • The networking stack consists of low-level communications drivers (modem, Ethernet and USB) up through Internet protocols (PPP, DHCP, DNS, IP, TCP and HTTP).
  • The graphics subsystem is a highly optimized portable and mature object-oriented color 2D graphics library.
  • Over this low-level code is layered about 1.5MB of C++ code that implements the user interface and device functionality. The elegant and simple device UI is touch-screen-driven around a collection of drop-down menus and trays that present the required tables, forms and windows.
Device Software Features
  • Bookmark, highlight and make notes - Use the touch screen to mark pages and passages and take notes.
  • Search - Tap on a word in the text to find other occurrences of that word or enter text to search for using the dropdown onscreen keyboard.
  • Single-tap dictionary - Create custom dictionaries that can be used to define words within any local content (e.g. acronyms or technical terms).
  • Auto-connect - At daily scheduled times, the eBook device can automatically connect to the server to retrieve new and updated content.
