| E Ink Screen Technologies | |||||
While not available in color yet, E Ink® Imaging Film is an exciting new solution for products requiring grayscale displays. It can be seen easily in direct sun, can be read at virtually any angle and offers longer battery life. E Ink has a black and white ink-on-paper appearance looking somewhat similar to a newspaper. E Ink uses microscopic colored beads suspended in a clear liquid between layers of plastic that react to electrical charges. The overall effect is that of a four-color grayscale screen that mimics the way light reflects on paper and allows for extended reading to take place at any angle. Because the display uses power only when an image is changed, E Ink High Resolution Displays have extended battery life over other types of displays. Here at eBook Technologies we are keeping a close eye on new E Ink and other screen technologies as we develop future eBook device designs. |

| Industry Support for New eBook Standards | |||||
International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF) Container Format working group is set to release a container format to allow publishers to release only a single standard file into their sales and distribution channels instead of the multiple proprietary files that they currently produce. The new ZIP-based proposed standard, OEBPS Container Format (OCF), is an extension of the packaging format defined by the OpenDocument OASIS Standard (ISO/IEC 26300). In the second specification, the OEBPS Working Group is developing the next generation of OEBPS to improve this XML-based standard as both a production and a final delivery format for digital publications. The effort will focus on detailed control of content rendering, navigation and accessibility, and alignment with other standards efforts. "Adobe has been very pleased with the rapid progress within IDPF towards creating an open and neutral container format," said Bill McCoy, GM ePublishing, Adobe Systems, Inc. "An open packaging technology clearly has applicability across multiple areas of our solutions, including eReading systems, and we look forward to working with industry participants to finalize this community-developed standard in the coming months." ETI co-led these standards efforts and our content tools set (eBook Publisher and Bulk Convert for Windows, and eBook Builder and Project Processor for Mac OS X) will support the new standards. OCF will become the standard eBook format when creating content for our eBook system -- regardless of weather the original content was Word, PowerPoint, text, HTML or OEBPS. The OCF format is also intended to be used by eBook users to exchange unencrypted content. Sony is a participating member of the working group and companies voicing support for the standards included Adobe, eReader/Motricity, iRex, Mobipocket, Osoft, and eBook Technologies. | Brown University School Bookstore Offers First Electronic Textbooks | |||||
Brown University in Providence, R.I. became one of the first academic institutions to offer textbooks in electronic format when it offered three e-textbooks for sale in its bookstore this past semester. Unfortunately the electronic textbooks were not an immediate hit. "College students will first have to see more value in e-texts," said Larry Carr, director of bookstore services. To date electronic textbook publishers have not taken full advantage of the electronic medium in most cases doing little more than adding some hyperlinks and search capabilities. "Printed textbooks force authors to adopt linear or segmented approaches to complex subjects involving a wide range of interrelated ideas and knowledge," recognises Mike Salamon, author of Industrial Relations: Theory and Practice (FT Prentice Hall)." A recent article by the Associated Press asks us to imagine a biology e-book showing video of the DNA double helix coming to life, rather than the two-dimensional illustration typically found in printed books. Still some see a benefit in moving to electronic textbooks now. Lewis Mandell, a University of Buffalo professor who writes and publishes an e-textbook, said he is able to update his finance books more frequently. "The investment world is changing on a weekly basis," he said. "Tax rates change every year." The need to provide up to date materials is important in the enterprise as well. Our enterprise customers tell us that they find eBooks ideal for reference information that frequently changes. Enterprise organizations who have adopted eBooks experience a whole new world of efficient and simplified content creation, revision, management, and distribution. |
