eBook Industry Pioneers Form New Venture to Drive Electronic Book Innovation

San Diego, CA - eBook Technologies, Inc., today announced its incorporation by well-known eBook innovators to develop and market electronic reading device products and content delivery and publishing technology for the emerging eBook market.

eBook Technologies, Inc. (ETI) was founded by Garth Conboy, former General Manger of the eBook Group, and John Rivlin, former Senior Vice President, Technology of Gemstar-TV Guide. While at Gemstar and in their previous roles at early eBook pioneer SoftBook Press, Conboy and Rivlin lead the software teams responsible for creating the eBook firmware, tools and distribution systems.

The development teams lead by John Rivlin and Garth Conboy were awarded 16 patents covering the unique designs, features and functions of an entire eBook publishing system. Patents can be grouped roughly into the following areas: the eBook system and features, cryptography, user interface elements, industrial design and manufacturing processes. Many of these patents have broader application outside of the eBook market.

Conboy and Rivlin are also known for their contributions to the Open eBook Publication Structure [OEBPS] that SoftBook Press and NuvoMedia along with Microsoft developed. This standard XML format is the source format used by most modern eBook reading systems (including ETI, Microsoft, Palm and MobiPocket).

ETI has developed a full-featured platform that manages the secure delivery of eBook content over the Internet from central server systems to portable reading devices. The ETI reading devices are low-cost, hand-held electronic reading devices with ergonomics similar to those of paper books.
