eBook Publisher FAQ

eBook Technologies eBook Publisher is the content conversion and publishing tool for creating professionally formatted content. This GUI-based tool runs under Windows and MacOS and provides the capability to import, manage and preview content before packaging it for viewing on an eBook device. The eBook Publisher allows you to create unencrypted personal content that can be moved directly from your PC/Mac computer to your eBook's SmartMedia or Compact Flash memory card. It is important that you upgrade your eBook firmware to version 3.3 or higher for this to work correctly.

Creating personal content with the eBook Publisher allows you to easily transfer user-created content from your PC/Mac computer to ETI devices.

  • What can I do now that I couldn't do before?

Using the advanced features of eBook Publisher, you can create professionally formatted personal content and transfer it directly to your device's SmartMedia or Compact Flash card for viewing on the supported eBook devices.

  • Is there more than one publishing tool?

There are three components to the eBook Technologies eBook publishing tools.

    • eBook Technologies eBook Publisher 2.1 (for Windows)
    • eBook Technologies eBook Publisher 2.1 (for MacOS)
    • RB2Project (for Windows)

  • Is there any additional documentation?

After downloading the publishing tools, the documentation for eBook Publisher can be found within the "Documentation" folder of the "eBook Technologies eBook Publisher" folder after installation.  When the RB2Project is expanded, you will find a "ReadMe.txt" in the "RB2Project Folder" which contains additional information.

  • How is this different from using the Personal Content feature of the website?

It differs in two ways. First of all, when you upload a document using the website's Personal Content feature, it automatically formats the content for suitable viewing on your eBook device. With the eBook Publisher, you are now able to manually control how your personal document is formatted for reading on an eBook device.

Secondly, by creating the eBook-formatted content on your PC/Mac computer, you are able to transfer it directly to your flash card (if you have a compatible flash card reader). This bypasses the need to have to use the website to deliver your personal document to your Online Bookshelf, and then download to your eBook device from your Online Bookshelf.

  • Can I create "encrypted content" for viewing on my eBook device?

The supported eBook devices only allow the direct import of unencrypted content. Thus eBook Publisher should be used to create unencrypted ".imp" files for this delivery method. You may create encrypted Open eBook File Format (OEBFF) packages with eBook Publisher (using the "OEBFF: All targets" target). If the resultant ".oeb" file is uploaded to the Web-based personal content server, the eBook Edition that will be downloaded to your device will be encrypted.

  • What is RB2Project?

RB2Project is a utility that can be used to take an unencrypted ".rb" file and convert it to either HTML markup for import into eBook Publisher or directly to a ".imp" file for viewing on the supported devices.

NOTE: This utility only exists for PCs running Windows, and is not available for Macintosh PCs.

  • Which firmware version is required for viewing unencrypted personal content?

All eBook Technologies firmware versions support viewing of unencrypted content as well as as providing direct support of ".imp" files.

  • Do I need a flash card adaptor to transfer my unencrypted personal content to my eBook's flash memory card?

Yes, a PC/Mac-connected (probably via USB or PCI card) SmartMedia or Compact Flash (CF) adaptor should be used to move ".imp" files to flash memory cards for viewing on supported eBook devices.  All that is required is to drag the ".imp" file to the top level of the SmartMedia or CF card, extract the card from the PC/Mac, insert the card into the supported device (running firmware 3.3 or higher) and power on the device.  The device will "discover" the ".imp" file(s) and automatically translate and move the file into the "SOFTBKS" folder on the card for normal viewing on the device.  Once moved, the content will show up on the device's "eBookshelf" just like any other piece of content.

WARNING: Always remember to turn your eBook off before inserting or removing the SmartMedia or Compact Flash card.

  • I transfered an ".imp" file to a flash card and inserted it in my eBook, but I either can't find it, or the eBook reports that the processing of the document failed. What happened?

When transferring personal content to your eBook flash card as an ".imp" file, you must ensure that there is at least twice as much memory space available on the flash card as the size of the ".imp" file. When the eBook first detects the ".imp" file it processes the file and needs the additional memory to complete the process.

  • Is there any support for these tools?

No. The tools are provided "as is" with no warranty, express or implied.  We believe that the release of these tools will provide additional functionality for eBook devices for our avid customers, but we cannot offer any end-user support of these tools.

  • Which eBook devices are supported for use with the eBook Technologies eBook Publisher?

All eBook devices are supported, both the ETI-1 and the ETI-2 (all require firmware version 3.3 or later).

  • Can I use special characters?

Yes. Special characters are available to use in all eBook Editions.
